Struggling to find a contractor who will call you back? Tips for remodeling in WI.

Living in WI is beautiful, relaxing, and I swear we have the best lakes in the world, but finding a contractor who responds in a timely manner and doesn't charge through the nose, can be really hard.

We regularly hang out with my brother's family. And we both always seem to have house projects we're in the middle of. There's always one thing that repeatedly comes up. Finding contractors or handy-men/women who respond in a timely manner and shows up on time. Don't get me wrong, there are some really great folks out there, and I've got a list. But when you've first moved into a new city or purchased a cottage somewhere where you know no-one- finding good people to do remodel projects can be challenging.

It once took me 6-mo. to find a plumber near my cottage that would install an affordable toilet. I'm not kidding. By the time I found the plumber we went with, I wanted to hug him.

Tip #1 - Become part of Facebook groups (for your lake, or your city).

People love to give referrals for special folks who did an awesome job with them. I think one of the reasons folks love to share this information, is because it can be so incredibly challenging to find someone who's affordable, shows up, and does a good job.

Tip #2 - Leverage Google Reviews

Search for contacts via google, and search for "near my location". You should see a list of folks, and any reviews that might be there. Avoid the 1 star folks. Given that I've just started my own remodeling business, I know reviews are important. We've become a world where folks won't buy a product unless there's a review. The same should hold true for remodel projects. This old standby is something I've leveraged for over a decade. If you're curious about a person who doesn't have reviews yet (maybe they just opened their doors, like me)- meet them, look at their work, and go from there.

Tip #3 - Get some help - from someone who has the contacts or experience, but not someone you'd traditionally think of

If remodeling isn't your cup of tea and it stresses you out, I've got a solution for you. The old answer was to go with traditional contractors who organize the work for you. But I think there's a better solution. Most contractors don't have design experience. This alone can cause a lot of stress, because it's all on you. And many will charge substantial fees (potentially doubling the cost of the project). There are folks like myself - who've worked on many projects throughout the years - and have a listing of folks we trust. Your project will likely be way less expensive than going the traditional route, and you'd get a professional design bundled in your remodel.

Remodeling doesn't have to be stressful, and finding contacts you trust can be easier than you imagine.
