So, to start, I'm going to introduce the smallest bathroom ever & the design challenge.
In all honesty, when I first saw this bathroom, I was a bit amazed that they fit a toilet, a shower and even a sink in here. Only one person fits in here at a time, and that alone leaves for some challenges when considering how we're going to update this thing. Doing a cottage remodel of any sort can be a tricky thing because most of the time, we're talking about VERY small spaces.
To start, this lovely little cottage is in Mountain, WI - a small town near Lakewood, or just over an hour north of Appleton, WI. Finding a contractor or trades folks in a rural place can be challenging. I've found joining groups on Facebook for the lake you're on- to be the best resource to get referrals for folks. People love to give their referrals.
How do I make my cottage bathroom look larger and more modern?
I attacked this in a couple ways. First - add a lighter color. One- I took the brown existing cabinets - and painted them a mint green. If you're not sure how to do this, send me a message- and I'll share which brands I've found the easiest to work with for chalk paint.
Two- we decided we'd rip out the old shower stall, and replace the entire back wall with a tile shower. It'll open up the space, make it easier to use. I selected a light grey brick tile for the shower walls. The tile serves a couple purposes - it'll also break up the wood paneling, and add some new texture. So, why brick, you ask? The cottage has some charming brick in the front entrance way- so I wanted to carry a bit of that through, so the new space looks updated, but looks like it fits with the rest of the cottage.
But, I want some contrast in here. One of my personal favorites is blue. I chose this for the flooring. I know some people put carpet everywhere, but I'm not one of those people. My design plan also called for new hardware, new faucet and a new toilet (not shown yet) - one that would give a few more inches between the door and itself.
Remodeling can be fun!
Don't be afraid of small spaces and don't be afraid of color. Color can have a transformative impact on a room, when used in the right way. Stay tuned- I'll post updates as the project progresses and a final picture of the room once it's done.
